Confirmation Process

The Discipleship Team has recently updated the confirmation process. If your student wants to become a member of the church, then here are the steps to take:

  • Step one: You, as a parent, have a conversation with your student.
    • We recognize that parents have the primary responsibility of their student’s discipleship. Therefore, since you know your student best, we encourage you to have some conversations with your student to see where they are spiritually and if they are ready to pursue membership.
  • Step two: Have a conversation with Michael Morefield, the Assistant Pastor of Family Life.
    • This allows me to be a part of the process and also helps me encourage and come along side your student as they are pursing membership.
  • Step three: Set up meeting with an elder (ideally your family’s undershepherd)
    • We will set up a meeting with an elder where an elder will examine your student to see if they are ready for membership. Based on the examination if the elder feels your student is ready for membership, then the elder will approve your student for membership.

Now we recognize that some students may need to be equipped and prepared for membership before they are ready to be examined by an elder in step three. If this is the case, then we recommend that students go through the Student Ministries Wednesday Night Series, “Essentials of the Faith & the Meaning of Membership” that will be offered every two years during the Fall. This series will be offered this Fall starting on September 14th. This class is not a confirmation class. It is not a prerequisite or requirement for membership. Middle school and High School students regardless or not if they are already members will take it. This is because this class is meant to be an educational series that is designed to prepare, refresh, and equip students on the basics of the faith and what it means to be a member of Gashland EPC.

If you have any questions about the confirmation process, please feel free to contact me.

Blessings,

Michael Morefield

IN THE LOOP?

It is my desire to be a resource to you in any way that I can. I believe an important part of family ministry is my partnership with parents. I want to help keep you in the loop on not only what is going on, but also what is being taught. This will give you an opportunity to better engage with your students about what they are learning and how they are learning to apply God’s Word to their lives.

  • High School Sunday School: We are currently in a series called: The Greatest Story Ever Told: A Journey from Genesis to Revelation. One of the goals of this series is to help students realize that the Bible is not a random and disjointed collection of stories, but rather from the beginning to the end it tells a single and unified story of God’s Gospel. This summer we will be starting Part IV of this study, God the King and God All Wise, which will cover 1-2 Samuel, 1 Kings, Job, Ecclesiastes, Psalms, and Proverbs. This Sunday we will be taking a look at 2 Samuel 7 and the Davidic Covenant.
  • Middle School Sunday School: The Middle School is going through the same series as the High School on Sunday Mornings: The Greatest Story Ever Told: A Journey from Genesis to Revelation. This Sunday we will be taking a look at 2 Samuel 7 and the Davidic Covenant.
  • Middle & High School Youth Group: For the last section of the summer the High School and Middle School will be doing a three week study called: How to Study the Bible. In this three week study we will take a hands on approach to help students know how to personally study and read the Bible in their quiet times. We will talk about the important of finding both truth and application, the importance of understanding the context of what we are reading, and lastly we will learn a practical process that students can use when they read their Bible on their own.
