IMPORTANT REMINDERS & NEWS:

High School Mission Trip: The High School Mission Trip is almost here! July 6th through the 10th. Please be praying for this trip! Let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns!

Middle School Mystery Trip: The Third Annual Middle School Mystery Trip is August 5th-8th. The cost for the trip is $85 and is due by July 19. Where are we going? It’s a mystery to me! Don’t miss out on the fun! Sign up on the Middle School room door or send me an email at Michael@gashland.org

In the Loop? I believe an important part of family ministry is my partnership with parents. I want to help keep you in the loop on not only what is going on, but also what is being taught. This will give you an opportunity to better engage with your students about what they are learning and how they are learning to apply God’s Word to their lives.

Starting this week in Connect I will be starting a new ten week series called “The Weird, The Wicked, and the Wondrous: Lesser Known Old Testament Stories.” Both the High School and Middle School will be going through this series. However, the content and lesson will be customized to each age group as the High School meets on Wednesday nights and the Middle School meets on Sunday nights for Connect.

There are some strange and cryptic stories in the Bible. Have you ever wondered what these stories mean and why God included them in the Bible? This series will examine ten Bible stories that often do not receive a lot of attention because of their weird, wicked, or wondrous nature.

The goal of this series is to engage students with intriguing stories that are included in Scripture and to help them see that all of the Bible is God’s inspired Word and is useful for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteous. This series will help students critically think about the meaning of these stories, how they fit into the larger story of redemption, and how even these strange stories can help us grow in our walk with the Lord.

Often times, it is easier to steer away from teaching about the hard things in the Bible. However, it is my goal that students will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to engage all of their Bible. I do not want students to bypass sections of scripture just because it is difficult or hard to understand. Instead it is my hope that they will wrestle with God’s Word and learn to love and appreciate all of it.

This summer series will include the following stories: Elisha and the bears, Jephthah’s vow, the floating axe head, Eglon and Ehud, the stoning of Achan, the talking donkey, Jael and Sisera, Elijah calling fire down on the soldiers, the earth swallowing Korah and company, and Ezekiel’s strange way of baking bread.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to call or email me!

Blessings,

Michael Morefield

Weekly Update | GEPC Student Ministries | June 9, 2015

Connect Student Ministry

Hi Parents!

I hope you had a great weekend! I wanted to give you the weekly update. Please be sure to check out the details about the Parent Meeting this week!

EVENTS THIS WEEK:

Connect: Wednesday night we will have connect from 6:30-7:30pm at the church!

Afterburner: Connect will be followed by an Afterburner at the Cable’s Home (1410 NE 95th Street, 64155) from 7:30-9:00pm. I will need some help in transporting students from the church to the Cable’s home. If two or three parents would volunteer to transport some students around 7:30pm that would be a huge blessing! Please send me an email at Michael@gashland.org if you are interested!

Parent Meeting: The Parent meeting is this Wednesday at 6:30pm in the Ministry Center (Gym). Aaron Kleinmeyer is teaching Connect for me, so that I can hold a Parent Meeting at the same time. I wanted to take the opportunity to connect with you all, discuss some important changes and updates in Student Ministry, and also address any questions or comments that you all might have. Please try and be there if you can! Thanks so much!

NEXT WEEK’S SCHEDULE:

Next week is VBS! VBS starts Sunday, June 14, and goes thru Thursday, June 18. This is an amazing opportunity for many middle school and high school students to help serve in our children’s ministry to reach out to over a hundred children with the gospel! Accordingly, there will be no Connect or Afterburner next week as we are giving our full support to VBS! Please be praying for VBS and all the children who will be hearing the gospel!

HELP!

The High School Mission Trip is coming up soon! We are in need of some help in transporting our students from here to Oklahoma. We wanted to see if anyone would graciously let us borrow a mini-van or vehicle that can transport 6+ students in it for the week of the mission trip? We know that this is a big request and if you are willing please send me an email at Michael@gashland.org. Thanks so much!

A PERSONAL NOTE:

I wanted to thank all of you for how welcome you have made Lacey and I feel at Gashland. You all have been such an amazing blessing to us in this time of transition. So thank you for all that you have done. It means a lot to have such an incredible church family!

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to email or call me. My contact info is listed below. I look forward to seeing you all at the parent meeting on Wednesday night!

Sincerely,

Michael Morefield

Connect Student Ministry

Hi Parents!

I just wanted to update you about this coming Sunday (June 7th). This is an exciting time of the year where we get to welcome students who are transitioning from elementary school to middle school and students who are transitioning from middle school to high school. So if your student was in the fifth grade this past year and is transitioning into the sixth grade in the fall, then we would love to have them join the middle school ministry on Sunday morning! Or if your student was in the eighth grade this past school year and will be going into the ninth grade in the fall, then we would love to have them join the high school ministry on Sunday! Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

Blessings,

Michael Morefield

The trip is August 5-8 (3 nights). As always, this year’s trip is sure to be a life changing experience. To keep the mystery in the Mystery Trip, only a select number of people know where we are going and what we are doing. Parents, this may be a little scary for you, we know! When you drop your child off at the church for the trip, you will be given a packet that has a detailed itinerary including where we are and what we will be doing at all times. It will include all of the leaders’ cell phone numbers so that you can contact us at any time. Sign-ups will be right outside the Sunday school room. Don’t wait until the last minute to sign up as there are reservations and deposits involved. The cost for this trip is $85 and is due by July 19.

Items needed:

  • Sack lunch for first day’s trip
  • Sleeping bag (bedding) and pillow

A few fun-loving adventurous adults are needed to join the fun.

Student Ministries Update | May 18th

Hello Student Parents, Friends & Supporters!

Ishi Stackpole and I (Melissa Cable) offered to help with the social events for the youth during the interim time before Michael arrives at the end of May. We also wanted to plan a bit in the summer so that things were in place when he got here to set him up to succeed! Here are a few things:

Connect

Connect will remain on Wednesday nights. In the past Connect was on Sunday nights over the summer, but with the growth of Conversations Mitch moved it to Wednesday to coincide with that. Leadership and Michael agrees that having a midweek gathering, even during the summer is a great opportunity for kids to remain connected outside of Sundays mornings. Therefore, we will be looking for host homes to host afterburners for many Wednesdays during the summer. The dates below are dates that are available. Once Michael is here he can intersperse other activities on some of these Wednesdays as well, like bowling, out to eat, ice cream night and so forth so on.

Afterburners

Afterburners are the time after Connect (worship and message) where kids  can just hang out and fellowship after the Connect time at the church. This is typically from 7:30-9 I believe, but I could be off a little on that. We have hosted it in the past and just grilled hot dogs, had snacks, let the students play basketball, played games in the yard, set up a net, had baseball games going on the TV and what not. There are normally maybe 20 or so kids, this includes junior high and high school. The first two dates, mission trip and VBS do not need afterburners. Let me know if anyone can do any of these. Reply to rwcable@hotmail.com. Here are dates needed:

May 20th– week off

May 27th– Summer kickoff- Michael starts officially, shares about himself.

June 3rd– Aaron leads, Michael observes

June 10th– Aaron leads, Michael observes

June 17– VBS

June 24th

July 1st

July 6th– Mission Trip

July15th

July 22nd

July 29th

August 5th

August 12th

Youth Summer Kickoff

Also, mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 27th for a summer youth kickoff and a welcome Michael evening. Details are still forming regarding this but it will most likely be held at Oak Grove Park from 6-8. We will need a few helping hands to grill burgers and dogs and will ask students to bring a snack or drink to share. Michael will share about himself that evening with the kids and there will be hang time the rest of the time. Parents are welcome to come and go and introduce yourself to the Morefields, there will also be another opportunity to meet him at the church wide picnic on June 7th. Look for information on both in the Link in the coming weeks.

VBS Student Volunteers

Also, VBS is coming up and high school students (and their parents!) have always been a vital part in this amazing week. Sign ups for volunteering that week are happening this month, dates are Sunday, June 14- Thursday the 18th. You can sign up online here.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask, if I don’t know the answer, I can find out. Lastly, please be in prayer for Michael and his wife Lacey as he is finishing up seminary, has his graduation, and has a large move all within a few weeks of each other. They will be taking a family vacation in between graduation and starting here, so be in prayer for that time, that God would use it as a time of renewal for Michael and Lacey. Finally, pray for their move and transition this summer into ministry here.

I am constantly in amazement over the body of Christ, how it functions together, supports one another, and in particular pours into its children and students. It’s why I always tear up at baptisms as we vow to raise these kids in the Lord, and each of you are doing that! Thank you!

Blessings

Summer Mission Camp

When: July 6th-10th | Where: University of Central Oklahoma; Edmond, OK

“Student Life Mission Camps are a Christ-centered camp for 7th – 12th graders. It includes engaging worship from experienced worship leaders, learning through sound biblical teaching and Bible study, community in Family Groups, and mission projects in the local community. It’s a week of focused learning, heartfelt praise, dramas, community building, teamwork, and most importantly, God’s Word on center stage.”

It is our hope to have the new Family Life Pastor in place by late May, so the camp represents a great opportunity for him to get to know the youth and for the youth to get to know him. More information on the Camp can be found at: http://www.studentlife.com/events/mission.

Cost:

  • Registration for the Camp is listed at $320 – $350 per student.
  • The estimated driving time is 5-6 hours – registration is at 1:00 PM on the first day and dismissal is at 9:45 AM the last day; therefore, there will be no overnight stay on the way down or return trip.
  • Fuel is estimated to be approximately $25 per student.

Fund Raising: Spring Fling Thing II

One of the small groups has agreed to host a fundraiser to help lower the cost for students to attend the Camp. It will be similar to the “Minute To Win It” event (Spring Fling Thing I) from a couple of years ago. The event will include a dinner, games, and a silent auction with all proceeds going to the trip. Additional funds will be raised through “Bug Splat Bingo” and a “Fill the Gas Can” campaign. Revenues will be split evenly between all the Students who help with the event.

When: April 11th | 6:00 pm-10:00 pm

Student Volunteer Positions:

  • Sign-up Tables: March 15, 22, 29 and April 5
  • Announcement to Congregation: March 22
  • Event: Set-up, tear-down, serve drinks (donations), door greeters, monitor silent auction items, score keepers/monitor game stations, child watch (maybe)
  • Works of Service: Auction time for works of service (4 people x 4 hours each)

Additional Needs: 4 parents to help in the kitchen; bottle water and/or case of soda.
